Theatre avec un grand T

New York theatre was, is and will be amazing.

I went to a one-time-only reading of Fat Pig by Neil Labute, read by the original MCC cast, at Lucille Lortel Theatre last week. It's the same play, but with less acting and no decor. It gave a tremedous power to the words, stronger than the best acting. In particular, the scene in which Jeannie slaps Tom didn't need any actual handwaving. Neil couldn't attend, but wrote a touching letter that was read to the audience to a round of enthusiastic applause.

The other play was Les Liasons Dangereuses at American Airlines Theater. Of course everybody knows the story, and Laura Linney gave it all the due respect. It was the real Broadway that makes you feel like you're living each act.

Read

Two people were "washing windows" of the New York Times building yesterday. The first was Alan Robert, a French dude, who had a sign in the lines of global warming kills more people than 9/11. That was just retarded. The second one was another nut, Renaldo Clarke who had to go through a psychiatric evaluation after his arrest. [NY Times]

The New York Times building is a block down and across the street from my office. These photos were taken by a colleague from our 12th floor. It wasn't the day of the opening and wasn't my idea to go see it and definitely not my idea of having to come early to stand in line to get good seats, but I did actually like the movie. It was really scary in the beginning, but turned out to have a real plot with cute moments and had a subplot of New York life that is somewhat realistic. The theatre was easily 90% screaming women too.

I also have to give credit to Sarah Jessica Parker for showing her sad (or real?) face, no make-up, or makeup with extra shadows (?), on a giant screen. That image will haunt many men who ever thought she was pretty.

Read

Warning, this is a geek post. In my real life, amongst other exciting things I use Wix and write custom actions in C++. It's a fine, yet often frustrating experience of how much infrastructure you need to write a simple custom action. Hence this post announcing the release of Deployment Tools Foundation with Wix just made me very happy - you can now write a CA in C# without any objections from RobMen and a huge library called DTF that abstracts all the MSI crap away. I used this at Microsoft before, it has finally seen the light of day!

Read

Liked it. It was not nearly as pornographic as advertised, the crowd was huge and there were some talented artists in the mix. The ambient noise was pretty high, but the blasting music covered it well. There was a big difference between good and bad models: ones that stand still and have done this before vs. the talking-laughing-turning kind. I wish I also knew how long the poses were in advance. In either case doing this once a month sounds like a plan.

Read | Updated 4/26/2008

Its director Brad Furman and leads Jon Leguizamo, Rosie Perez & Yul Vasquez were on hand for the premiere. The film was opened by a remarkable short, "A Day's Work" directed by Rajeev Dassani who spoke briefly after both films. The short told a simple story gone very wrong. Three Mexican day workers struggle to get hired for five bucks an hour, which is followed by the inevitable escalation through all of the fifteen minutes of what was probably a misunderstanding.

Read | Updated 4/12/2008

The talk was moderated by a NY Times contributing author Arhtur Lubow. They spent two hours talking about food, sex and art as a harmoneous experience, explicitly denying anything violent and completely overlooking 21st century edgy and sharp objects. While many banalities had been said, I found Cai particularly interesting and insightful. He told a very conservative story of sex, but his passion for the art was really what I needed to hear.

Read | 5 Images

Moscow - New York = Parallel Play

I went to the opening party of Moscow - New York = Parallel Play and Thaw: Russian Art from Glasnost to the Present at Chelsea Art Museum a couple of weeks ago. The show is definitely worth a visit, on through May 17th.

The first was particularly interesting with many pieces of The Kolodzei Collection. The Kolodzei Collection, founded by Tatiana Kolodzei in Moscow during the height of the Cold War and continued today with her daughter, Natalia, is one of world’s largest private collections of Russian and Eastern European Art, with over 7,000 pieces by more than 300 artists from Russia and the former Soviet Union, chronicling four decades of nonconformist art from the post-Stalinist era to the present.

There was a lot of Russian Standard had at the event by a lot of Russians. I also picked up a copy of Russia! Magazine, who's editor is Michael Idov from Spielerfrau. See Yamabushi. There're two male astronauts making out on the cover, it's much about controversial art. I'm going to subscribe.

The museum is also home of the Jean Miotte foundation.

Forgot to mention a really cute Krappy Kamera Show at the Soho Gallery. I finally got a signed copy of my friend's Michelle Bates "Plastic Cameras: Toying with Creativity". The monkey was priceless and deserves its first place in the show.
