Today Mishamishka spotted another Jim Joe on Avenue B. She said: “I wonder whether he/she sits somewhere waiting for the piece to get picked up by someone or a garbage truck …”.
The first Jim Joe I brought home had a 33 on it, which I can call my lucky number. This could have been a portrait of me. It’s unclear whether it’s really my “lucky” number, but It was just too weird for a coincidence. I had to take the piece home! It never looked like a child’s drawing to me - Jim Joe knows how to draw, although he might not even know it himself. I think Jim will have to work much harder to aspire to the career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, but you never know. Jim is now over the subway graffiti and is making works that can be carried away – an essential ingredient for collectors. I also like the fact that most works probably end up being picked up by the garbage trucks, creating an element of scarcity and some temporary drawings.
The second piece that we brought to our studio today was bigger and bolder. It’s a portrait of a woman. She looks alive and happy. Notice the similarities in the direction of the head, eyes, eyebrows and lips. The material used is the same as well: a hollow part of a wardrobe or dresser. Jim Joe has his own style and I really like it.

Jim, I’d gladly pay you $100 cash for a third work that features a similarly happy child. You can e-mail me at dblock[at]dblock[dot]org and we’ll arrange some kind of anonymous drop-off.
